Jeunesse Anion Advocates Mental Health
As a brand that truly advocates wellness, Jeunesse Anion recently held an event that takes to spotlight the importance of mental health. Featuring three speakers who talked about the holistic approach in mental illness management, the recent gathering also tackled the three dimensions of a human being from body, soul, and spirit and why each element should be seen as a whole to ensure a person’s well-being.
Mental illness is by and large a taboo topic in our culture. When a person is said to have such condition, it’s often labeled as crazy, disturbed, or psycho, plus many other “names” that come with it. Sadly, the stigma against people with mental conditions becomes a major barrier for them to seek help and open up with their own families. Today, the latest data shows that the country is alarmingly at 3.3 million Filipinos with a depressive disorder and 3.1 million afflicted by an anxiety disorder. On top of it all, the latest data shows that those who have suicidal thoughts or have considered suicide at least once in their life are between 13 to 17 years old.
During the gathering at Alba Restorante Capitol Commons, campus director and Victory Greenhills pastor Dave Estrera kicked off the event by discussing that humans were created as both physical and spiritual. “When the physical aspect or our lives are compromised (through sickness, injury, pain) it affects our soul (emotions, attitude, behavior) and our spirit. “It’s hard to have a positive outlook in life when one is sick and in pain,” shared Estrera.
Philippine- US registered dietitian-nutritionist Cheshire Que also emphasized that diet, nutrition, and exercise play a part in a person’s mental health. “Food fuels the brain in order to function optimally. Poor nutrition causes nutrient deficiencies that affect hormonal imbalance and many other factors that influence mood, thought process and other functions of the brain.”
Meanwhile, mental health advocate and YOLO by Renzo Suntay founder Sheila Suntay lost her eldest son because of depression which resulted in suicide in 2018. “Depression is not being ungrateful for the blessings that we have. It’s an illness people did not choose to have for themselves. Our misguided and uninformed beliefs will do nothing but cause pain to people who need professional help, not a lesson on gratitude.”
Aside from the forum organized by Jeunesse Anion, the brand also provided a cash donation of P50,000 both for YOLO and National Center for Mental Health, which will be allocated for training volunteers and providing for the basic needs of patients in the center.
Mental health is a collaboration and calls for a holistic approach, one solution is not enough and it truly takes a village to raise a mentally healthy person. “Mental health is such a sensitive topic but it’s an important issue to discuss and Jeunesse Anion takes part in putting an end to the stigma of mental illness. If you’re a person who suffers from a mental condition, know that your feelings are valid and your situation is not hopeless. Seek out professional help and surround yourself with positive people who look out for your well-being,” said beauty titlist and Jeunesse Anion ambassador Ivanna Pacis.
